The BA course of studies in English and American Studies at the University of Freiburg is a 3-year full-time course taught in English. It provides general education in the language, literature, and culture of the English-speaking world with regard to linguistics, literary science, and cultural science. In this program, you will develop near-native communicative skills, study the structure and evolution of English, and acquire special expertise either in linguistics or in literature/cultural studies. Further, there is a component of practical applications, such as internships or time abroad.

You will learn
Linguistics: You'll learn the fundamentals of linguistics-syntax, semantics, phonetics, etc.-as well as more advanced topics, including variation and change in English.
Literature: You will study both the historical and theoretical aspects of English and North American literary traditions.
Cultural Studies: You will analyze social, political, and cultural phenomena in Anglophone contexts from interdisciplinary perspectives - media, history, etc.
Language Competence: Grammer, speaking, translation, and advanced practice modules are included.
Specialization: You choose one of two specializations to study in detail, either in Linguistics or in Literature/Cultural Studies.
Extended Studies & Practical Applications: This includes internships, study abroad (especially within the EUCOR network), and deeper cultural or linguistic work.
